Why Wearing a Suit is Not Haram for a Muslim Man
C.J Ahmed-01.05.2023
Suits are common in this modern world and is very popular in some parts of the world among men. The Muslim opposition to wearing the suit is generally is base on certain hadiths which are misquoatd without th orrect understanding of Islam and its law. As far as Islam is concerned, there is nothing prohibited for a Muslims man in wearing the suit.
Actions are According to Intentions
“Ibn ‘Umar said: “The Messenger of Allah (Sal) said:
‘Whoever imitates a people is one of them."
(Abu Dawud-Graded Sahih by Albani)
For us to understand the above hadith base on the right context, we need to understand the other hadiths on this subject as well. What needs to be understood is that it is your intention that matters and the prophet (sal) said,
. "Actions are according to what was intended"
(Bukhari)
Nowadays men and women wear the same dress in parts of the world. Take for an example in Cambodia and Indonesia, men and women both wear the traditional sarong and when it comes to wearing jewellery, both men and women wear rings and even watches The word “imitating” is subjective and trying to put one’s own opinion is dangerous when there is clear evidence from the Sunnah to prove that it is halal. There is no doubt that wearing makeup is not haram for men and not all men put on makeup to resemble women and trying to prohibit something based on a scholar’s personal opinion cannot be accepted.
It is clear that we should only stick to the Quran and the authentic hadiths and blind following a scholar even after it is evident that the scholar's opinion has no clear evidence from the Quran and the Sunnah should not be accepted. It is lear that a Muslim girl or woman can wear a suit and it is not haram
Opinions of the Scholars With Regards to Wearing The Suit
The Salafi scholars like Ibn Baz, al Gudayyan and others gave the following fatwa as their opinion,
“The general rule is that it is permissible to wear anything except for that which the Sharee’ah has specifically prohibited, like gold and silk for males barring cases of scabies and other skin diseases. Wearing trousers is not specific to non-Muslims. However, wearing tight trousers that clearly identify the body parts including the awrah is impermissible. As for wearing loose-fitting trousers, this is permissible as long as they are not worn with the intention of imitating non-Muslims.
The same ruling applies to suits and ties, as this attire is not something specific to non-Muslims. Therefore, it is permissible to wear them, unless the one wearing them is doing so with the intention of imitating non-Muslims. So the general rule is that all types of clothing are permissible except that which legislative evidence indicates is prohibited, as has preceded.”
