Is it Haram to Wear All Red in Islam? Best Answer
C.J Ahmed-04.05.2023
Wearing all fully red is not haram for a Muslim because according to several authentic hadith, the prophet (sal) did wear red color. There is no evidence to suggest from the Sunnah that the prophet (sal) forbade wearing full red.
The prohibition of wearing red was only for Ali(rali) and not others.
Narrated 'Ali (rali)
“Allah's Messenger (sal) forbade wearing of silk and clothes dyed with safflower (a red dye).” (Sahih Muslim)
It was narrated that 'Ali said:
"The Messenger of Allah [sal] forbade me- but I do not say that he forbade you- from wearing rings of gold, and from wearing Al-Qassi, and from wearing Al-Mufaddam (garments dyed deep red) and Al-Mu'asfar (garments dyed with safflower), and from reciting Qur'an while bowing."(Nasai and Imam Nasai Graded it Sahih- Sunan an-Nasa'i 5173)
The prohibition of wearing red with safflower was forbidden only to Ali (rali). It should be noted that Ali (rali) was only forbidden the use of safflower was and not the color red itself. The safflower plant can be used to make both red and yellow dyes and stating from these hadiths that red color is haram is shear ignorance in the Matn (text) of the hadith.
Evidence to Prove That Wearing Red Color Is Fully Halal
There is ample evidence to prove that wearing red color is halal and below are the hadiths,
Narrated Al-Bara:
“The Prophet (sal) was of a modest height. I saw him wearing a red suit, and I did not see anything better than him” (Bukhari)
Narrated Amir:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah (sal) at Mina giving sermon on a mule and wearing a red garment, while Ali was announcing.”(Abu Dawud –Graded Sahih by Albani)
Bara' (rali) reported:
Messenger of Allah (sal) was of medium stature. I saw him wearing a red mantle. I have never seen anything more graceful than that. (Muslim)
Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib:
“The Messenger of Allah (sal) had hair which reached the lobes of his ears, and I saw him wearing red robe. I did not see anything more beautiful than it.” (Abu Dawud-Graded Sahih by Albani)
