Why a Hijabi Can Wear a Wig in Islam with Proofs
C.J Ahmed-14.05.2023
In Islam, there is no clear evidence to prove that wearing a wig is haram. What has been mentioned in the hadiths which forbid is about hair extensions and not wigs. A hijabi can definitely wear a wig and it is not haram.
Wearing Wigs vs Hair Etensions
Wigs are overings made out of real or artificial hair nd hair extensions are hair lengthened using artificial hair to make it look longer. There is a fundamental difference between hair extensions and wearing a wig. As fasr as Islam is concerned, there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever to prove that wearing wigs are haram. Islam is ctually silent on wearing wigs and silence is a mercy from llah(swt) and is a sign of permissibility.
The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122 and also graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani)
As for wearing hair extensions, although it is generally haram in Islam, it is still halal under necessity and for a reason.
Ibn 'Umar (rali) said:
“The Messenger of Allah (sal) cursed the maker and wearer of an extension and the tattooer and the one who is tattooed.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
What is mentioned here is the word “mulhaqat” meaning extensions and what is mentioned here is hair extensions. Altough generally it is forbidden, it is still halal under necessity to wear hir extensions as well.
"He has only forbidden you carrion, blood, and swine, and that which has been consecrated to any other than Allah. But who is driven by necessity, neither craving nor transgressing, it is no sin for him. For Allah is Forgiving, Compassionate."
(Al-Quran-2:173)
These verses give a clear picture that proves that something that is already made haram will become halal due to a necessity if there is no transgression. Allah(Swt) explains in theses verses when mentioning about meat which are forbidden and also says that although meat like carrion and swine are haram, it becomes halal under necessity. Let me give you another example,
"Narrated Anas (Rali):
The Prophet (sal) allowed `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf and Az-Zubair bin Al-`Awwam to wear silk because they were suffering from an itch" .
(Sahih Al Bukhari)
In this hadith, the prophet(Sal) allowed Abdur Rahman bin auf and Zubair bin Awwam to wear silk because they had an itch.
It is not haram for a hijabi to wear a wig because Islam does not forbid wearing a wig.
