Why Ghusl Is Not a Must After Masturbation with Three Answers
C.J Ahmed-21.04.2023
Ghusl is not required if you masturbate and th only exception would be if you emit semen..Even wudu is not required after touching your prvate parts.
The correct view I that touching your private parts accidentally or deliberately won’t break your wudu and the below hadith clearly proves this,
1. Narrated Talq bin ‘Ali (rali):
A man said: “I touched my penis” or he said, “Does a man who touch his penis during the prayer should perform Wudu (ablution)?” The Prophet (sal) replied, “No, it is only a part of your body”. (Bulugh al Maram and reported by Al-Khamsa-Ibn Hibban graded it Sahih (authentic)).
Some try to argue that this hadith is abrogated but there is no valid proof from the authentic hadiths which states that the prophet (sal) abrogated it.
2. Narrated Talq:
“We came upon the Prophet of Allah (sal). A man came to him: he seemed to be a bedouin. He said: Prophet of Allah, what do you think about a man who touches his penis after performing ablution? He (sal) replied: That is only a part of his body.(Abu-Dawud-Graded Sahih by Albani)
If you only emit semen does ghusl become obligatory and if there is no emission of emen, then ghusl does not become a must.
3. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported:
The Messenger of Allah (sal) happened to pass by (the house) of a man amongst the Ansar, and he sent for him. He came out and water was trickling down from his head. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: Perhaps we put you to haste. He said: Yes. Messenger of Allah. He (the Holy Prophet) said: When you made haste or semen is not emitted, bathing is not obligatory for you, but ablution is binding. Ibn Bashshir has narrated it with a minor alteration. (Sahih Muslim)
Still Ghusl can be avaided if there is a necessity or if you fear that ghusl could harm you and in that case, Tayammum is preferred.
Amr Ibn al-‘Aas (Rali) said:
I experienced a wet dream on a cold night during the campaign of Dhaat al-Salaasil, and I was afraid that if I did Ghusl I would die, so I did tayammum, then I prayed Fajr with my
companions. They mentioned that to the Prophet (Sal) and he said: “O ‘Amr, did you lead your companions in prayer when you were Junub?” I told him what had kept me from doing Ghusl and I said: “I heard Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ‘And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allaah is Most Merciful to
you’ [al-Nisa’ 4:29].” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
smiled and did not say anything.

Masturbation is not haram in Islam. There have been various fatwas by scholars among the Salaf who have mistakenly given their fatwa stating that masturbation is haram. All of these fatwas are based on one verse in the Quran which has nothing to do with masturbation. The verse is as follows,
"And those who guard their chastity. Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, - for them, they are free from blame. But whoever seeks beyond that, and then those are the transgressors."
(Al Quran23.5-7)
The above verse in the Quran is taken out of context and has been used as proof to forbid masturbation. The verse quoted above only mentions about sexual relations between persons other than ones wives and slaves and masturbation is only a thing that you engage with yourself and not others. Imam Shafi was the first person to use this verse to argue that masturbation is haram and many others have blindly taken this position of his without scrutinising what he has said. If you observe the verse carefully, you would understand that there is no mention of the word masturbation being forbidden. the word" But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors." as being taken out of context and interpreted to mean that the masturbator is a transgressor as he is seeking something beyond what his right hand possesses. This verse only means about things what Allah (swt) and his Rasool (sal) have clearly explained in the Quran and Sunnah of what is sexual transgression. In the Quran and the authentic hadiths, what are mentioned as sexual transgression are adultery, fornication and homosexuality.
