Why Being a Magician is Not Haram in Islam
C.J Ahmed-20.05.2023
There are two types of magic. One is the magic performed using Jinns and the other is just using illusion. There is nothing haram in using illusionary magic which is available in this modern world in magic shows and other forms of entertainment.
There is nothing in the Quran or the authentic hadiths to prove that illusionary magic is haram. Whatever is sai against this is based on the plain opinions of scholars who have made arbitrary decisions based on their wims.
The prohibition of using magic tricks is baed by those who are against magic using the following verse,
In the Quran Allah (swt) says,
“Then behold, their ropes and their sticks, by their magic, appeared to him as though they moved fast” (Al-Quran 20:66)
The above verse has nothing to do with magic shows or isllusions because Firawn’s magicinas used trickery to deceive people and nowadays magicinas do not use these kinds of illusionary magic to trick people but to entertain them and the audience knows that this is trickery. It is the intention that matters.
Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (rali) narrated that he heard the prophet (sal) say,
"Verily actions are by intentions, and for every person is what he intended” (Bukhari and Muslim)
The magic forbidden in Islam is sorcery which involves Jinns that are used to harm people.
Narrated Sa`d:
Allah's Messenger (sal) said, "He who eats seven 'Ajwa dates every morning, will not be affected by poison or magic on the day he eats them."(Bukhari)
Evn some forms of speech is considered magic. Now according to these scholars, even speaking is haram by default because according to their argument, all forms of magic is haram.
Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:
A desert Arab came to the Prophet (sal) and began to speak. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (sal) said: In eloquence there is magic and in poetry there is wisdom.(Abu Dawud-Graded Sahih by Albani)
There is nothing haram in being a magician.
