Why it is Not Haram to Wear a Cross Neckless
C.J Ahmed-14.05.2023
Wearing a cross neckless is not haram for both men and women. With the intention of not imitating Christians, there is nothing haram in wearing a cross necklace. The view that having a shape of a cross is haram is based on the following hadiths which has noting to do with wearing crosses.
Narrated `Aisha:
“I never used to leave in the Prophet (sal) house anything carrying images or crosses but he obliterated it.” (Bukhari)
Narrated 'Aishah:
The Messenger of Allah (sal) never left in his house anything containing the figure of a cross without destroying it.(Abu Dawud-Graded Sahih by Albani)
In these hadiths, the prophet (sal) personally erased imges of crosses and he did not order others from doing so. Nowadays crosses come in various shapes, designs andsizes and trying to fit all corsses in to the Christian cross is utter stupidity and ignorance. It is clear that women can wear necklaces but the controversy surrounds on whether en can wear necklaces.
Some might argue that men who wear errings are effeminate men and this is not true because even masculi ne men wear earrings. We cannot tear open a man’s chest and see his intentions.
Usamah ibn Zayd reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent us on an expedition. In the morning we attacked Al-Huraqat of Juhaynah. I caught hold of a man and he said, “There is no God but Allah!” I stabbed him anyway. Then, it occurred to me that I should mention that to the Prophet. The Prophet said, “Did he say ‘there is no God but Allah’ but you killed him?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, he only said it because he feared the weapon!” The Prophet said, “Did you tear open his heart to know if he meant it or not?” The Prophet continued repeating it to me until I had wished I had not embraced Islam until that day. (Sahih Muslim)
In certain African and Indian tribes, men wear earrings and it is accepted in that culture and the argument that earrings are only for women is a false argument which has no basis in Islam.
Islam is Silent on Men Wearing Necklaces
The argument that Islam forbids from men wearing earrings is only based on reasoning from the above discussed hadiths and not from direct evidenece. Islam is completely silent on whether men can wear earrings and silence is from the mercy of Allah.
The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122 and also graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani)
There is no evidence to prove that wearing necklaces with a cross is haram in Islam.
