Why it is Not Haram to Eat in Front Of Someone Who is Fasting
C.J Ahmed-14.05.2023
Islam has not forbidden a person who is not fasting from eating in front of a person who is fasting. Islam is actually silent on this issue and silence is from the mercy of Allah (swt).
The Prophet (sal) said, “Verily Allah has obligated the obligations – so do not neglect them. And He has limited the limits – so do not transgress them. And His silence about things is from His mercy, not forgetfulness, so do not investigate them.”
(Hasan sahih-Ad-Darqutni No. 4/199 and Al-Baihaqi No. 10/122 and also graded Sahih by Sheikh Albani)
Without any textul evidence, no one has the right to dictate and say that it is unethical or haram for a non fasting person to eat in public or in front of a fasting person. Allah(swt) says,
"O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may develop God-consciousness." (Al-Quran 2:183)
Narrated `Aisha:
(The tribe of) Quraish used to fast on the day of Ashura' in the Pre-Islamic period, and then Allah's Apostle ordered (Muslims) to fast on it till the fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed; whereupon the Prophet (sal) said, "He who wants to fast (on 'Ashura') may fast, and he who does not want to fast may not fast." (Bukhari)
In none of these verse or hadiths although it mentions about fasting does it stipulate a condition that people who do not fast should not eat infront of those who are fasting.
There is nothing wrong in a non fasting person to eat in front of a fasting person.
